FPSC Job Test vs CSS MPT: Key Differences

The CSS MPT and the FPSC job-post test compared on marks, negative marking, passing and syllabus, with advice for preparing for both.

4 min read

Plenty of candidates are in both queues: they are preparing for the CSS and they have also applied for an FPSC job. The two tests share a commission and an MCQ format, so it is easy to assume they work the same way. They do not, and the differences are exactly the kind that cost marks.

Key takeaways

  • Negative marking is the big one. The MPT has none. FPSC job tests deduct 0.25 for every wrong answer.
  • The MPT is one fixed paper. An FPSC test is built around your post, with its own sections and weights.
  • Passing is a flat 33% on the MPT. On FPSC it is 40% or 50%, and sometimes in every part.
  • English appears in both, so it is the one place your preparation carries over directly.

The FPSC numbers are from Consolidated Advertisement No. 03/2026. For the format in more detail, see How the FPSC MCQ Test Works and, for the MPT, CSS MPT Screening Test: Format, Passing Marks.

Negative marking changes how you answer

On the MPT you should answer everything, because a wrong answer and a blank both score zero. That is covered in CSS MPT Has No Negative Marking.

On an FPSC test, a wrong answer loses a quarter of a mark. Guessing is still sensible once you can eliminate options, and a blind guess on a four-option question is nearly break-even, but you are no longer filling every blank by reflex. If you sit both tests, set a rule for yourself before each one: "fill everything" for the MPT, "eliminate, then decide" for FPSC.

One syllabus against many

The MPT draws on five compulsory subjects, and every candidate gets the same paper design. An FPSC paper depends on the job. A Computer Operator post is English plus a Professional Test on operating systems, databases and networking. Some lecturer posts drop English for a subject test, and a medical post can be built on core medical courses.

That is why the first step for FPSC is always your own post's syllabus page. How to Read an FPSC Syllabus and Choose Your Post shows how.

What carries over

Not much, but some:

  • English. 88 of the 91 FPSC posts have an English part, and English is one of the MPT's five subjects. Grammar, sentence structure and vocabulary practice helps with both.
  • Test habits. Pacing, a pass over the easy questions first, a final check for blanks. The details differ because of negative marking, but the habits are the same.
  • Your review routine. Looking at what you got wrong, why, and how sure you were. How to Use Your MPT Mock Score to Find Weak Sub-Sections works the same way on an FPSC result.

What does not carry over is the Professional Test or Subject Test content. If your post is in IT or engineering, no amount of general knowledge practice will cover it.

Using Mock CSS for both

Not sure which practice mode to open? Full Mock, Practice Set or Custom Mock: Which to Use sorts them out.

One account covers both programs. The free tier gives you 3 full mocks a month in total, shared between CSS MPT and FPSC, so a mock of either kind uses one. Premium removes that limit for both.

Two things work differently. Past Papers are for the CSS MPT only, since FPSC job posts have none on the platform. FPSC practice is built around full mocks, Practice Sets and Custom Mocks (Premium) drawn from your post's syllabus.

If you are short on time, split it by deadline. Put the earlier test first, and spend a fixed slice of each week on the other so the habits do not go cold.

Frequently asked questions
